Google Search

The Google problem is a big one. On one hand, there is the active scouring of the internet for content that feeds data to the social media aggregators that sell your information. This goes on non-stop and creates a permanent footprint tracking of your personal data.

On the other hand is the more personal tracking that Google does of your specific search activities. When you are logged into a Google account (any property of theirs including Youtube, Blogger, Google Analytics, Google Plus, Google Phots, Google Apps, etc), the mere action of being logged in allows them to store all your browsing activities and search activities to profile your behavior.

Once again this is supposedly for advertising tracking but unfortunately it can be used for a lot more. Even at the level of aiding advertising, it is an invasive action that can be used to manipulate you.

Are you aware that two people can search Google at the same time and get different search results based on your political beliefs, your financial status, your age, your preferences?

Google also invasive tactics for tracking where you are in the Internet using Google Analytics. Using this, someone can identify who is visiting a website just from meta data coming from your profile such as your location and other preferences. This data is seen by website owners and shared by Google.

Google also owns another property which should instill fear. The Wayback Machine or Internet Archive has a history of what the Internet looks like at any given moment. This means people who change websites will be surprised to see other versions of the website or social media site as it existed historically. Thus this assures data permanence.

The EU has implemented Right-to-Forget Laws related to Google but this is a contentious topic in the US because the right to forget may be different for a law abiding citizen vs. a pedophile.

Google (Alphabet) also owns another property which can be used to manipulate what you see on the Internet based on your profile. This company is Jigsaw. This is a more active participant in changing what the Internet looks like to you. Intended originally for countering Islamic extremism, it can be used to alter the Internet for any group identified as a target, perhaps based on political beliefs.
