Do burner phones protect you? About the only benefit I can think of for burner phones (for which there are alternatives) is to not reuse the same phone number for 2 Factor Authentication.
Unfortunately burner phones offer no secrecy. The 3-Letter Agencies have Voice print tracking that can identify your voice and match it to you even on a burner phone.
Burner phone purchases can likely be tracked as well and can be discoverable with video cameras at the store you pruchased it from.
But the worst part about a burner phone is that unless it is used only once, you can be identified by who you call. If you call your spouse with your new burner phone then you are zucked anyway.
So again, the only time I would think about a burner phone is if I chuck it after a single phone call.
